They Came For The Schools🎈

Is the Indivisible Movement influencing CyFair ISD?

Julie Hinaman, a school board member of CyFair ISD, posted on X about her support for Moms4Libros after voting against the removal of contentious content from textbooks in May 2024. Moms4Libros stands in opposition to Moms4Liberty, a group advocating for the removal of explicit material from school libraries accessible to minors.

Indivisible Cypress reposted Julie's concerns shortly after her May 20, 2024 post.

Another sizable group from the Indivisible movement expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision.

Many of the curriculum chapters recently removed appear to align with the beliefs and values promoted by Indivisible in their groups and organization. At a recent CyFair ISD Board meetings, a number of their members, including progressive Democrat House Representative Jon Rosenthal, protested against the removal of these chapters.

Jon Rosenthal is recognized as one of the founders of the Indivisible Movement group in Texas Congressional District 7, as stated on Wikipedia.

Tom Oliverson, a Republican House Representative, said Proud of my conservative school board members referring to their vote to remove the controversial curriculum chapters. Scott Henry, Natalie Blasingame, Justin Ray, Lucas Scanlon, Todd LeCompte, and Christine Kalmbach are the six conservative members of the CyFair ISD school board Tom Oliverson is referencing.

Dr. Audrey Young, defended the conservative CyFair ISD board members decision. Dr. Audrey Young, who recently retired, was on State Board of Education (SBOE). SBOE sets curriculum standards and reviews and adopts instructional materials for public schools. This includes curriculum for CyFair ISD.

Portion of an article from KHOU-11 News:

Dr. Audrey Young, a Republican who represents a portion of Cy-Fair ISD on the State Board of Education, defended the move. "The local school board spoke the voice of the community. It is the example of how school boards should be taking care of the curriculum that they send down to the children in their districts," Young said. She said there's nothing wrong with choosing to remove some material from textbooks. "They actually can purchase any curriculum they choose to purchase," Young said. "If they take from that list and they receive curriculum that they want to modify, then local school districts have that opportunity to do so as well." Young said the decision won't impact what's being taught in the classroom. "There's no reason to have all of the additional material in there if it's not directly related to what the State of Texas feels like the children should be learning," Young said. Full Article

At a CyFair ISD board meeting, it was explained the new CyFair ISD library policy is designed to align to House Bill 900 (HB900), a law designed to keep sexually explicit materials out of children's hands. The new policy also will have upcoming books posted publicly 30 days before purchase so community members can provide feedback before the books enter the school libraries. HB900 Summary.

Community Impact, Houston Chronicle and ABC13 cover the story.

During the June and August 2024 CyFair ISD board meetings, Julie Hinaman was the only no vote against a new library policy designed to safeguard students from potentially harmful materials in school libraries. The six conservative board members voted yes, and the new library policy passed.

It appears Indivisible members/groups are not supportive of HB900. Book banning is a common term among those who oppose HB900.

Following Donald Trump's election in 2016, the Indivisible Movement surged in popularity due to the publication of the Indivisible guide and book.

In the book Indivisible, it is explained how they coordinated their movement using the Women's March and a dozen new resistance Facebook groups. The 2017 Women's March is defined by Wikipedia as a worldwide protest on January 21, 2017, the day after the inauguration of Donald Trump as US president.

Indivisible groups/members have expressed their disapproval of HB 900, the bill aimed at safeguarding children from inappropriate pornographic content in school libraries. In 2023, Blue Willow Bookshop sued the state of Texas regarding HB900, claiming that the legislation violates the bookseller's First Amendment rights. Here is the official complaint.
